 The Church for All Peoples

Holyrood Church is a congregation of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. It is part of the Episcopal Church of the United States and the world-wide Anglican Communion. Holyrood Church (Holyrood means “Holy Crucifix” or “Holy Cross”) was founded as a Protestant Episcopal congregation in 1893 by Rev. William Oliver Embury. He was chaplain of The House of Refuge for Problem Girls which was operated by the Sisters of St. Mary in what is today Inwood Hill Park.
As a People’s Church we lead people into a healthy relationship with God, Jesus, others, and themselves.
The Church serves a multicultural, multiracial, multiethnic, and multigenerational and incluisve community of people who congregate to worship in three languages; English, Spanish, and Sign Language (ASL). Holyrood Church is part of the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City and serves as a safe refuge for immigrant families facing deportation.

We are a Landmark People’s Church

May 18, 2021, was, and continues to be, a special jubilee day.  The New York City Landmark Preservation Commission, by unanimous vote, designated our Holyrood Church/Iglesia Santa Cruz as a Landmark. It means our Church has special historical, cultural, and aesthetic value to the City of New York, state, or nation, is an important part of the City's heritage.   Read More...
