We are a Landmark People’s Church
May 18, 2021, was, and continues to be, a special jubilee day. The New York City Landmark Preservation Commission, by unanimous vote, designated our Holyrood Church/Iglesia Santa Cruz as a Landmark. It means our Church has special historical, cultural, and aesthetic value to the City of New York, state, or nation, is an important part of the City's heritage.
For over 125 years Holyrood Church / Iglesia Santa Cruz has been the heart and soul of Washington Heights. The beauty of being a Landmark is defined not only by the prettiness of its physical structure but also by its ability to allow the community to have access to enjoy this space as a zone of liberation to reaffirm and accompany them in their daily struggles. Hence, we are proud to move our church into this new phase of interconnectedness and interdependence with the community. In the midst of a pandemic that calls for physical distancing, we have told the people that this building is theirs and it continues to be a social approach that makes us better people.
